One of the worst days that we relive every year is the day we run out of Sudan Rume. And, without fail, year after year, one of the best days is when the next harvest of Sudan Rume arrives at the roastery. Work comes to a standstill, people fall to their knees in gleeful tears, loved ones are called, celebration and merriment abounds. For a glorious moment we cease to be coworkers, and instead walk hand-in-hand into a shared glimpse of paradise. We take an arrival sample to roast. We cup it together. I weep. Lex cries out “I have seen the face of God”. There is peace on earth as we are reminded of all the things we share, that bring us together rather than what tears us apart. A beautiful stillness as this bliss echoes from here to eternity. And then, DHL bangs on the door, soooooo pissed we don’t have packages ready for pickup. Just like that we hustle, and life just… goes on. Back to normal. And we forget about the extraordinary. The beauty in the midst of life’s chaos. But a cup of Sudan Rume is here from time to time to remind us that there exists life beyond the mundane. Life is beautiful. It always is, and sometimes we just need to be reminded to look around and appreciate that truth. How truly priceless. There are some things that money just can’t buy… and for everything else, there’s mastercard.
