Basáltico takes its name from the ancient basalt rock formations found in Casabianca, Tolima, where producer Guillermo Cardona's farm sits close to the town centre. These formations, known locally as stone columns, were likely formed by the cooling of volcanic lava from the nearby Nevado del Ruiz and historically served as a refuge for indigenous communities. Casabianca is home to one of only three such basalt formations in the world, alongside formations like the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. The Cardona family has built a brand around this geological heritage, with Guillermo's 18-year-old son Andres recently opening Café Basáltico in town, actively contributing to the development of coffee culture in Casabianca.
We bought this to be a nice clean easy drinker Colombian washed lot - and it landed super nice - we regret not buying a larger allocation than we have. It's not that it's got super wild flavours, it's more that it is just super good at what it does. Big sweetness, acidity, body, comfort flavours.
We're tasting:
Bright lemon cake, caramel and apple aromas. In the cup it's got a delightful combination of rich sweetness and bright acidity - cox's orange pippin apple, satsuma, lemon cake and blackcurrant jam for the acidity, but then dense & rich body and finish that reminds us of muscovado and raisin, with a frangipani element - like fruitcake. Super chuggable
